Who Is the Holy Spirit?

Reposition: Who Is the Holy Spirit?

Focus Verse: ‘However, as it is written: ‘what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ – the things God has prepared for those who love him- these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.’ 1 Corinthians 2:9-10

Who is the Holy Spirit anyway?
Maybe you often think of the Spirit as an “it”- a formless spirit, going where it pleases here on earth. Or, do you see the Holy Spirit as a powerful force that comes upon you when you call upon the name of the Lord?
If we don’t know who the Holy Spirit is, we may be missing out on knowing that the Creator of the universe actually lives within us. Yes, within our human form is where the everlasting God takes up residence when we profess and believe that Jesus is Lord. The Spirit of God is not just a voice or platform of communication to God— like a receptionist to Heaven that simply sends the message to the one we are actually trying to get a hold of. No, the Holy Spirit is the actual manifestation of God Himself, in Spirit form, that lives inside of us as a result of the loving sacrifice of Jesus Christ. How incredible?
So, He is not just the essence of God that is found within us, but God Himself. The Holy Spirit is the God-person that resides in every single follower of Christ.
The Spirit of God is our Advocate. He encourages and guides us in wisdom and truth. He is our counselor and comforter! He is the person of God inside us that nudges our hearts in kind conviction when we lie to someone, idolize a relationship, or fall into lust. He whispers to our heart the truth about who we are when the world tells us who we are not. He leads us towards all things good, heavenly and righteous. It is only by His presence within us that we are able to discern and understand the things of God. “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only though the Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV). So, when you are reading your Bible and you know and accept His Word as truth, that is actually the Spirit of God within you and He is the only one who knows the things of God. Amazing, isn’t it?
The Holy Spirit empowers us to new life outside of our sinful, human desires because He communicates God’s truth to our hearts and gives us His almighty power to do so! It may take time chipping away at our flesh and learning to lean in and listen to the Holy Spirit, but as we abide in Him, give Him our time and are obedient, we begin to expose the beautiful God-person He has placed on the inside of us. In a similar way that Michelangelo chipped away at the rough edges of a large marble slab to eventually reveal the inner statue of David, the Holy Spirit guides us in throwing away the things of the world to instead expose the true and everlasting things of God that live in our heart.
So, what do you need the Holy Spirit to show you today? Lean in, and ask Him, He’s waiting for you.
