Made in Maine | The Cost to Follow

Sermon Notes:

Are you willing to follow?

Disciples are…

Surrendered followers of Jesus who together, practice and experience the presence of God, empowered and equipped to live on mission.

Follower:

  1. one that follows the opinions or teachings of another
  2. one that imitates another

We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. 1 John 2:3-6

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Matthew 4:17

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Matthew 4:18-22

Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him. Matthew 4:25

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25

Following Jesus results in Obedience to Jesus

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. Colossians 3:5-7

But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Colossians 3:8-10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 6:10

…From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:66-69

“…Knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10b

Following Jesus leads to Knowing Him

“To whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life…” John 6:68

Following Jesus

  1. Grab your Bible, Journal and a Pen
  2. Open to Matthew Ch. 1, Read a Chapter a Day
  3. “Hear” His words, put them into practice
